CSH Launches PostDoc Program

A new initiative supports early-career researchers tackling global challenges with a two-year, fully funded postdoctoral fellowship at CSH.

CSH is a research center comprised of scientists who, based on real-world data, aim to understand the world’s most complex challenges. With the launch of the CSH PostDoc Program, a new opportunity has opened for young researchers who are passionate about finding answers to the big questions of our time through complexity science—such as how regional supply chain disruptions impact the economy, the effects of online misinformation on societies, how to redesign transportation to make cities greener and safer, and strategies for reducing cybercrime.

NEXT GENERATION OF EXPERTS

The CSH PostDoc Program, bolstered by a €2.77 million grant from the Austrian Federal Ministry of Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation, and Technology (BMK), offers a two-year, fully funded postdoctoral fellowship, enabling researchers to develop independent projects within a multidisciplinary framework, where they use unique datasets and state-of-the-art data curation along with cutting-edge methods to address these real-world problems.

CSH President Stefan Thurner emphasizes the importance of this initiative: “Our new PostDoc Program in Complexity Science and Data Competence offers young researchers at the Complexity Science Hub the opportunity to share and discuss their findings directly with decision-makers, helping to realistically assess the impact of decisions.”

FAR BEYOND PURE SCIENCE

Beyond research, the program emphasizes holistic professional development. Fellows will engage in training that spans data ethics, open science, and leadership, complemented by personalized mentorship from a global team of advisors. They will also participate in workshops on scientific communication, project management, and data curation, with the added benefit of an annual travel budget to attend conferences and conduct research visits.

Since its establishment in 2016, CSH has quickly risen to prominence as a leading European institution for the study of complex systems, bridging disciplines from economics and medicine to social sciences and ecology. The new PostDoc Program aims to address methodological gaps in complexity science while applying these advanced techniques to urgent global issues.

Applicants for the program are expected to hold a PhD in relevant fields and demonstrate a strong foundation in quantitative research. The program is open to candidates of any nationality, with a particular focus on increasing diversity in the sciences. Participants must be willing to relocate to Vienna, a city consistently ranked as one of the world’s most livable.
