Moritz is a PhD student at the Network Science Institute at Northeastern University, advised by Alessandro Vespignani.

Moritz holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Physics from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. During his Master thesis, under the supervision of Wolfgang Wernsdorfer and an internship in Johannes Fink’s lab at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria he investigated possible applications of solid state and optical quantum technologies. In 2022, he graduated from University of Vienna with a Master’s in Computational Science. For his thesis he worked together with Stefan Thurner and Peter Klimek at CSH to develop a multilayer network model of global food supply and studied the propagation of supply shocks.

His current research is organized around the interplay of dynamics and structure in social and biological systems. In his work, Moritz combines techniques from network science, information theory and machine learning to understand how mesoscopic structures evolve and persist in these systems. He is interested in applying  these ideas to various problems, including the emergence of scientific disciplines and social movements but also cell differentiation and morphogenesis.
