Health Across Species

In an interconnected world, infectious diseases, including zoonoses, swiftly traverse species and ecosystems. With our network-based approach, we aim for a deep epidemiological understanding of how diseases spread, as a basis for early and targeted prevention for animals and humans.

Approximately 75% of emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) in humans are zoonotic, transmitted between animals and humans. Some zoonoses, as evidenced by COVID-19, present epidemic or pandemic potential and can induce profound and enduring impacts on human and animal health with massive consequences for society. These diseases threaten livestock, directly impacting sustainability of farming, food security, and biodiversity.

We investigate infectious disease epidemiology with a focus on zoonoses and EIDs. Within a One Health framework, we explore the complex, dynamic human-animal-environment interfaces, where cross-species disease transmission occurs, so-called spillover events. We aim to identify the underlying drivers of these spillover events to enhance prevention strategies.

We research animal trade patterns to shape policies for disease surveillance and control in farmed animals. With the growing digitization of livestock production, we explore using data streams (e.g., from sensors or feeding systems) along with veterinary information, farm management practices, and genetic data for early disease detection and improving animal welfare.

In collaboration with public authorities, we analyze detailed meat product supply chain data, forming the foundation for a new monitoring system ensuring food availability across the entire supply chain – from the farmer to the supermarket. This allows us to quantify and visualize systemic risks in food supply networks.

Our approach is multidisciplinary and bridges epidemiology, veterinary, data, and complexity science. We prioritize applied research that has real-world applications and can make a positive impact on the health of people, animals, and the environment.

Goals

  • Understanding the spread of infectious diseases within and between species
  • Developing measures to mitigate the risks of infectious diseases for animals, humans, biodiversity, and ecosystems, contributing to public health and sustainable farming
  • Gaining insights into supply chains and their vulnerabilities and monitor systemic risks in basic provisioning to ensure food safety
  • Advancing knowledge and accessibility of infectious disease data to support One Health mathematical modeling and risk assessment frameworks
