Tamás Biró received an MSc in physics and biophysics and his PhD degree from Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest. He worked on theoretical heavy ion physics and strange quark production in quark-gluon plasma first at the KFKI Atomic Energy Research Institute in Budapest, then continued as a researcher at the Niels Bohr Institute, Copenhagen, the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt, and the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Giessen. Since 2013 he has been vice director of the Institute for Particle and Nuclear Physics at the Wigner Research Centre for Physics in Budapest.
Tamás suggested the color rope model for describing the early phase of ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions in 1983, took part in studies of chaotic dynamics in strongly interacting non-abelian gauge fields (1991 to 1999), then developed a faible for statistical physics of complex systems and non-extensive thermodynamics.
He collaborates with colleagues at Duke University in North Carolina, USA, Bergen University in Norway, Universities of Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa, Central China Normal University in Wuhan, China, Yukawa Institute in Kyoto, Japan, UBB Cluj, Romania, and TU Wien, Austria, and edited the Acta Physica Hungarica, and was Editor in Chief of the EPJ A (Hadrons and Nuclei). He leads the nanoplasmonic laser inertial fusion group, NAPLIFE, since 2020 and since 2021, he is also affiliated with UBB Cluj in Romania.
