As of January 2026, Jan Bachmann is a Visiting Student at the Complexity Science Hub. He originally joined the Complexity Science Hub as a PhD candidate in April 2021.
He received his master’s degree in computer science from RWTH Aachen University, where he conducted multiple projects at the Chair of Computational Social Sciences and Humanities led by Markus Strohmaier. In his master’s thesis, he compared causal inference algorithms and applied them to music streaming data to identify hidden temporal dependencies in listening behavior across different countries.
Jan’s current research interests lie at the intersection of data science and social science. In particular, he studies how social biases and inequalities affecting minority groups can emerge solely from the structure of social networks. He applies modern data science and network modeling techniques to large-scale real-world and synthetic social network data.
Jan is pursuing his PhD at the Department of Network and Data Science at the Central European University (CEU).
