Stefan Pichler is the Vice-Rector for Research at Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU) and a Professor for Finance and Banking at WU. Born in Leoben (Austria), he graduated in Business Administration at the University of Graz where he also finished his doctoral studies with distinction in 1994.
He started his academic career in Graz and pursued it 1996 at the Vienna University of Technology, where he earned his venia docendi in 1999. In 2003, he was appointed full professor of Banking and Finance at the WU.
At WU, Professor Pichler has served as Academic Director of the master’s degree programs in “Quantitative Finance” and “Finance and Accounting”, and as head of the Institute for Finance, Banking and Insurance. He remains a faculty member of the Vienna Graduate School of Finance. Professor Pichler took office as Vice-Rector for Research on October 1, 2015. Among positions as visiting professor and lecturer in Innsbruck and Lubljana he held many positions in different expert panels or as a member of varying advisory boards. (e.g.: Head of the Expert Panel on Public Financial Management in Austria assigned by the Minister of Finance, or Head of the Financial Advisory Board for the federal state of Salzburg)
Since 1991 he has been a voting member of the ATX Index Committee and a highly valued speaker at the Alpach Financial Market Symposium at the European Forum Alpbach for the last years. His research activities are Bank and Financial Management, Credit Derivatives and Risk Management.
