THE COMPLEXITY SCIENCE HUB (CSH) WELCOMES BOKU VIENNA AS ITS NEWEST MEMBER

It’s BOKU time! The knowledge and experience amassed over 150 years of research in the life sciences meet with the burgeoning field of complex, networked phenomena. An unexpected pairing, yet the fortified partnership between BOKU and CSH is a logical progression. In contemporary science, where substantial data must be processed and interpreted across diverse fields, including various departments at BOKU, collaborations like this become essential.

Whether addressing the global distribution of resources, fostering sustainable city development, or investigating the impacts of climate change, profound insights demand a nuanced, interdisciplinary comprehension of intricate relationships.

“BOKU’s detailed knowledge and the associated data in areas such as value chains, biotechnology and climate change, coupled with CSH’s methodological expertise in the field of big data, create a bundling of complementary skills. This synergy empowers us to make greater leaps together than would be possible individually,” explains Stefan Thurner, President of the CSH.

In order to work even more closely together in the future, BOKU officially joined CSH last week.

MAJOR GLOBAL CHALLENGES

“BOKU is the only university in Austria that has oriented its entire research and teaching towards major global challenges such as the climate crisis, biodiversity crisis, energy crisis, resource scarcity, and food security. We place special emphasis on an interdisciplinary and systemic approach that encompasses a comprehensive quantitative and predictive understanding of complex systems, as well as their manageability. Membership in the CSH represents a significant step for us. Through collaborative research projects, we hope to gain valuable contributions and answers to these major challenges,” says Christian Obinger, Vice Rector for Research and Innovation at BOKU.

Building on existing research collaborations, CSH and BOKU plan various joint projects. Scientists will scrutinize global resource flows, where disruptions with far-reaching consequences are currently unfolding due to geopolitical tensions and the effects of climate change. The goal? To develop a better understanding of the underlying connections and dependencies to fortify resilience.

RESEARCH PARTNERS

Other members of CSH are AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, Central European University (CEU), Graz University of Technology, Medical University of Vienna, TU Wien, University of Continuing Education Krems, VetMedUni Vienna, Vienna University of Economics and Business, and Austrian Chamber of Commerce (WKO).
