Gerald Steiner is full professor of organizational communication and innovation, dean of the Faculty of Business and Globalization, and chair of the Department for Knowledge and Communication Management at Danube University Krems in Austria. Gerald received his PhD in management studies and social sciences (Organizational and Innovation Management) from the University of Graz, and a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering, both Austria. His training was partly conducted at UC Berkeley, UCLA, and the University of Oklahoma at Norman. He is a former Schumpeter professor and visiting scholar at Harvard University’s Weatherhead Center for International Affairs (WCFIA). Since 2018 he has been member of the Associate Faculty at the Complexity Science Hub Vienna.
At Danube University Krems, Gerald (co)founded four transdisciplinary labs: the Transdisciplinarity Laboratory Sustainable Digital Environments; the Transdisciplinary Laboratory for Sustainable Mineral Resources; the GovLab Austria; and the Biodiversity Hub. He co-directs the PhD program in migration studies.
Gerald’s main research interest is in systemic and sustainability management. His research is guided by a systems and complexity science approach, and is centred around sustainability-oriented innovation systems and processes with a particular emphasis on knowledge integration; sustainable entrepreneurship; cross-boundary communication and collaborative creative problem solving; transdisciplinarity and stakeholder involvement; and competences for solving complex problems. More recently his research also focuses on sustainable resource management, the phosphorus supply chain, and phosphate rock mining.
Gerald’s work has received several awards and has been published in high-ranking international journals such as Science of the Total Environment; Business Strategy and the Environment; Sustainability Science; Resources, Conservation, and Recycling; Minerals; Systemic Practice and Action Research; and Systems Research and Behavioral Science.
