Fabian Wagner is a senior research scholar at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), adjunct faculty at the Technical University in Vienna and Associate Faculty at the CSH Vienna. During the academic years 2014 to 2016, he was the Gerhard R. Andlinger Visiting Professor for Energy and the Environment at Princeton University’s Andlinger Center and the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.

Fabian’s research interests range from sustainability science, including energy-water-climate-air-health nexus and SDGs to network analysis and deep learning, optimization and risk. He is currently working on urban metabolism and resilience, climate-economy models, and linking process and I/O analysis.

Before joining IIASA in 2004, Fabian was a researcher at the IPCC National Greenhouse Gas Inventories Programme located at the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) in Hayama, Japan. Prior to that, he was a postdoc with the International Energy Analysis Group at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) in Berkeley, California. Fabian received both his PhD (in theoretical physics) and two master’s degrees in mathematics and history and philosophy of science from Cambridge University (UK). In 1998, he won the Cambridge University’s J.T. Knight’s Prize in mathematics.

Fabian has repeatedly consulted for the UNFCCC and the IMF.
