With the Digital Services Act (DSA) coming into force, vetted researchers have better tools than ever to study and report on the effects of algorithms on social media platforms. Simultaneously, civil society organizations can continue contributing to our understanding of these effects by requesting access to publicly available data. We, therefore, want to take stock of the challenges that existed before the DSA, how the DSA will address some of these challenges, and how we can help researchers in academia and civil society cope with remaining challenges in the future.
