Anton Korinek

Anton Korinek is a Senior Researcher at the CSH Vienna as well as an Economics Professor at the University of Virginia and the Darden School of Business.
His research analyzes how to manage the transition to a world transformed by Artificial Intelligence (AI). He investigates the implications of advanced AI for economic growth, labor markets, inequality, and the future of our society. He also examines policy measures to steer advances in AI in socially desirable directions.

In his past research, he investigated the mechanics of financial crises and developed policy measures to prevent future crises, including an influential framework for capital flow regulation in emerging economies. His research has been published in the top journals of the economics profession and featured on Bloomberg, in the Economist, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post. He has won several fellowships and awards for this work, including from the Institute for New Economic Thinking, the Hewlett Foundation, and the Long-Term Future Fund. He is also the Economics of AI Lead at the Centre for the Governance of AI (GovAI), a Nonresident Fellow at the Brookings Institution, a Senior Advisor at the Partnership on AI, a Research Associate at the NBER, and a Research Fellow at the CEPR. He received his MA in Economics from the University of Vienna and his PhD in Economics from Columbia University in 2007 after working in IT and finance. He has since held positions at the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins, as a visiting scholar at Harvard University, the Bank for International Settlements, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, as well as a frequent visitor to central banks.
