Andrew Ringsmuth is a PostDoc at the Wegener Center for Climate and Global Change at the University of Graz. He was a CSH PostDoc in 2020.

Andrew’s research aims to better understand how societies co-evolve with nature across scales. His background bridges a wide range of scientific fields. After completing bachelor degrees in physics, philosophy, and psychology at the University of Queensland (UQ), he went on to an Honours degree in theoretical physics, focussed on the foundations of quantum theory. Also at UQ, Andrew then worked between the Centre for Engineered Quantum Systems and the Institute for Molecular Bioscience, completing a PhD in multiscale analysis and optimisation of photosynthetic solar energy systems.

As a PostDoc, Andrew first extended his PhD research within the Department of the Biophysics of Photosynthesis at the VU University Amsterdam. He then joined Stockholm Resilience Centre to develop stylised models of multiscale dynamics in social-ecological systems, studying systemic resilience within the planetary boundaries.

Andrew is now extending this work at the Wegener Center and CSH Vienna, where he also contributes to more general theoretical work on the foundations of complex adaptive systems. His broad research interests include nonequilibrium thermodynamics and statistical physics, ecological economics, societal metabolism, sociophysics, common-pool resources, theoretical biology, multilevel evolution, environmental psychology and the philosophy of science.
