Alipasha Vaziri

Alipasha Vaziri is the Associate Director of the Kavli Neuronal Systems Institute and a Professor at The Rockefeller University where he studies how large-scale dynamics of neuronal networks are related to brain functions and behavior. As the head of the Laboratory of Neurotechnology and Biophysics, he is a world leader in developing new imaging technologies for neuroscience and has developed various forms of Ca2+ imaging platforms for whole-brain and largescale imaging of neuroactivity including light sculpting based on temporal focusing, light field microscopy, the Hybrid Multiplexed Sculpted Light (HyMS) microscopy, and most recently, Light Beads Microscopy (LBM).
His lab develops and applies new optical neurotechnologies for large-scale, high-speed interrogation of neuroactivity at single-cell resolution that have consistently pushed the limits on speed and scale – up to the level of entire brains – at which neuronal circuits can be functionally recorded across different model systems.

He holds a Ph.D. in quantum physics from the University of Vienna and completed postdoctoral training at the National Institute of Standards and Technology as well as the University of Maryland. He subsequently worked a research scientist at HHMI Janelia Research Campus and led an independent research group at the Research Institute for Molecular Pathology (IMP) in Vienna before joining the Rockefeller University in 2015.
