Selcan Mutgan

Selcan Mutgan is an Assistant Professor at the Institute for Analytical Sociology at Linköping University, Sweden. She has a background in Economics and Demography and received her PhD in Analytical Sociology in 2021. In 2022, she was a Visiting Fellow at the Scandinavian Consortium for Organizational Research (SCANCOR), Stanford University.

She specializes in segregation dynamics, focusing on how individual decisions, shaped by social and structural conditions, aggregate into macro-level patterns. Her work draws on large-scale Swedish register data and advanced quantitative methods, including empirically calibrated agent-based modeling and social network analysis.

Selcan is involved in several research projects, including The Complete Network of Sweden (NetReg), which analyses full-population network of social exposure among individuals in Sweden. She also participates in projects on educational inequalities, preschool segregation, peer influence, and discrimination. She is currently leading a project funded by the Swedish Research Council (VR) on life-course segregation across multiple social domains.
