Due to the increasing importance of environmental sustainability in the steel industry, the demand for green steel has risen sharply. Green steel refers to the production of steel using environmentally friendly processes that often utilise electric arc furnaces powered by renewable energy sources. A key aspect of green steel production is ensuring a stable and efficient supply chain for scrap metal as the most important raw material.
The project therefore focuses on mapping the international and Austrian scrap metal trade, analysing competition, supply and demand dynamics and developing advanced models for the scrap metal market and the railway system involved in transport.
