Visualization is not a service, but a way of thinking, collaborating, experimenting, and communicating.

WHAT THEY DO

The data visualizations team at the Complexity Science Hub operates at the intersection of disciplines, designed to make insights from complexity science visible, intelligible, and compelling.

They engage with global questions, enable collaboration across fields, and experiment with new modes of communicating scientific research. By structuring data and bringing latent patterns to the surface, these visualizations render phenomena perceptible that would otherwise remain abstract or unseen.

Zoonotic Web: Visualizing Pathogens Spreading Across Species

Mapping Austria’s Zoonotic Landscape — Human, animal, and environmental health are fundamentally interconnected. The Zoonotic Web maps potential disease transmission pathways connecting people, animals, and the environment across Austria from 1975 to 2022. The visual received the Gold Award at Information Is Beautiful 2024 (Science, Technology, and Health) and was featured in the Places & Spaces global traveling exhibition as well as in the ISOTYPE exhibit in the Wien Museum.

In 2026, Liuhuaying Yang received the Förderungspreis of the City of Vienna in STEM for “changing the way we see and understand the world with the help of science,” and a gold Impressive Individual award at the Infor mation Is Beautiful Awards for clarity, consistency, and thoughtful design.

After its Wien Museum debut, the Zoonotic Web joined "Places & Spaces: Mapping Science," a global traveling exhibition shown in over 450 venues across 30 countries, from Davos to the New York Public Library. Created by Amélie Desvars-Larrive and Liuhuaying Yang, the project shows how complexity science can make invisible risks visible.

Liuhuaying Yang from the Complexity Science Hub (CSH) at the Vienna Ball of Sciences — At the Science Ball, Liuhuaying Yang integrated two projects – Blossoms Through Time and Leveraging Global Talent – into Blossoms and Gateways, presenting them on a mega screen as a unified sensory experience for everyone at the ball.

THE IMPACT

Visual methods structure complex information and support understanding of scientific questions. Several of the CSH visualization team’s projects have been recognized internationally for the way they reveal patterns and dependencies that are otherwise difficult to see.

As a shared language, visualization brings together disciplines, senses, and places. The CSH Visual Team collaborates internationally across research, journalism, art, and design, experiments beyond visual form through sound, installation, and narrative, and connects global research with local impact.
