Helmut Haberl is professor of socio-ecological metabolism at the Institute of Social Ecology at BOKU University in Vienna. He served as director of the Institute of Social Ecology and is now deputy head of BOKU’s department of economics and social sciences. He is also PI of the Doctoral School Social Ecology at BOKU.

Helmut has MSc degrees in biology and mathematics (University of Vienna), a doctorate in ecology (University of Vienna) and a habilitation in human ecology (University of Vienna).

His research is focused on the sustainability of society-nature interactions, a deeply interdisciplinary endeavour. In much of his work, he proceeds by co-developing concepts to quantify, map and model stocks and flows of material and energy forming society’s biophysical basis.
