WEdnesday SALON – AI and the End of Work (Again)
From the dawn of mechanization to the rise of AI, machines have taken over task after human task – transforming work, making us richer, and testing our ability to adapt. Is this time different?
For as long as we have built machines, we have built them to take over human work. Work did not end. It was transformed: what we do, how it is organized, and where it happens. Collectively, this made us richer, moving labor to more productive uses and spurring investment in education, training and health. But adjustment had a price, paid unevenly: some learned new skills or moved, some retired early or took jobs where their skills lay idle. Institutions mattered: workers fared better where countries invested in them and gave them a voice. AI parallels past technologies, but also differs. Can this time be different?

What is the WEdnesday SALON?
A public event at the Complexity Science Hub where leading scientists explore big questions in language everyone can understand. No background knowledge needed.
Inspired by Vienna’s turn-of-the-century salons, the WEdnesday SALON brings science into an open conversation – inviting everyone to listen, ask questions, and join the discussion. It’s a SALON for the WE.
🎤 This WEdnesday SALON will be moderated by science communicator Aashima Dogra-Freitag.
Photos and/or videos may be taken at this event and used by the Complexity Science Hub for communication purposes across its channels. By attending, you consent to being photographed or filmed. If you do not wish to be recorded, please inform a member of the CSH team before the event.
