Visualizing Seshat: Unveiling Patterns in Human History with Seshat Databank
CSH Talk by Jingrong Zhang
The Seshat: Global History Databank represents the most comprehensive and systematic collection of historical and archaeological data ever assembled. Founded in 2011, Seshat captures the intricate social and political organization of human societies over time, enabling researchers to explore macro patterns and test hypotheses about historical processes. Unlike traditional data sources, where information is scattered and often inaccessible, Seshat organizes this knowledge into a well-defined, computer-readable format that facilitates cross-regional and longitudinal comparisons.
In this talk, we will explore the challenges and innovative solutions involved in visualizing such a massive and complex database. Drawing inspiration from nature, such as the dandelion’s delicate yet intricate structure, we aim to create an engaging, artistic, and interactive visualization that not only reveals the underlying patterns of human history but also celebrates the collaborative effort that made Seshat possible. This visualization will not only be a tool for scholars but also an invitation for the public to appreciate the beauty and significance of our shared past.
