Usable Security Research with Cryptocurrency Owners

Cryptocurrency owners represent a rapidly growing and highly heterogeneous group of individuals in terms of their attitudes, motivations, usage patterns, risk profiles, and security practices. Early portraits that have framed them as tech-savvy and highly vigilant adopters of a new technology fail to capture the complexity of their security and privacy behaviors as well as the broad range of attack vectors they face nowadays. Empirical behavioral research is essential to uncover these nuances and provide critical evidence and recommendations for designing future digital payment systems that offer stronger consumer protection. In this talk, I will present an overview of my previous empirical studies on cryptocurrency users, sharing key insights. Additionally, I will address the significant methodological challenges present in the recruitment of research participants from this globally dispersed user base.
