Social-Ecological Systems: from the Past to the Future

The goal of Adam’s talk is to sketch the research program his group and our international network of partners have been carrying out in the last 6 years. Their goal is to carry out a data-intense study of historical social-ecological (mostly in Western Eurasia) in the context of environmental stress (epidemics, climate, etc.) and political-economic development to learn how similar systems could behave in the future and what are the possible interventions or adaptations to their current and future dynamics. He will focus in particular on how we can look at precedents of the Great Acceleration to better understand and present in more detail their new ERC Synergy Grant EUROpest: A Novel Understanding of Pandemic Disease in Preindustrial Europe (1300-1800): Combining History, Machine Learning, and Natural Sciences.
