Mapping Supply Chain Shocks: The Case of Ecuador’s Banana Industry
Global value chains connect the welfare of economic actors across countries and industries, yet disruptions to these systems are not distributed evenly. Differences in power relations and market structures shape how shocks are transmitted along supply chains, influencing the distribution of losses and profits among firms and workers. Understanding these dynamics is essential for both assessing the resilience of production systems and for evaluating the social consequences of disruptions. In this talk, I will present Ecuador’s banana industry as a case study and discuss how we plan to build a detailed industry map by combining data on firm-level transactions, satellite observations of agricultural areas, and international trade flows. This map will enable us to analyze historical disruptions and their differential impacts across the supply chain.
