Extending Economic Complexity and Fitness with Production Networks and Import Dependencies
CSH Talk by Vittorio Bargero (CSH visiting student)
The Economic Complexity framework and the Fitness-Complexity algorithm have proven effective in capturing the productive capabilities of countries through the analysis of international trade data. However, both approaches primarily rely on export information and implicitly assume that the complexity of a product can be inferred independently of its production requirements and input structure.
This research extends these frameworks by incorporating production networks and import dependencies into the complexity dynamics. Product complexity is linked to the complexity of its required inputs, while imports are used to account for the external capabilities embodied in production processes. The resulting framework aims to provide a more accurate measure of domestic productive capabilities and to distinguish productive knowledge from assembly-based activities.
