The underrepresentation of women in STEM fields remains a critical challenge. Even though increasing women’s visibility might inspire and encourage young scholars, the study of the evolution of gender representation in STEM conferences is scarce. Despite its importance, the study of gender representation in such settings is limited. Our study examines the evolution of gender diversity among attendees and invited speakers at 17 computer science conferences (2003–2022) and the APS March Meeting (2005–2023). Using speaker data, we apply permutation tests to assess whether gender significantly influences representation and conduct matching experiments to compare the probability of being invited between male and female researchers with similar academic profiles. Preliminary findings reveal persistent gender biases, such as the underrepresentation of women in computer science and physics conferences, and confirm previous results such as the lower paper productivity and lower seniority compared to male speakers. However, the results also highlight recent efforts to enhance the visibility of female researchers, reflected in an increasing probability of women being invited as speakers. This study underscores progress and ongoing challenges in promoting gender equity in STEM conferences.
