Complexity Science Policy Workshop
Overview
This workshop is designed to help PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, and other early-career researchers develop a clearer understanding of how academic research can engage with and inform policy.
The workshop will bring together complexity scientists from Rome, Oxford, and UCL with policymakers and researchers from the Joint Research Centre, International Labour Organization, European Commission, the OECD, and the Austrian Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure.
Rather than focusing on the presentation of research findings, the emphasis is on learning how policy actors think, what types of evidence and communication they find valuable, and how researchers can effectively connect with the policy space.
PhD students and postdoctoral researchers will also have the opportunity to present their research directly to policymakers and researchers contributing to policy debates. This will take place in small-group fireside chat formats.
Through open discussion with policymakers and researchers experienced in policy engagement, participants will gain insight into how research can contribute to contemporary policy debates, what makes it useful or overlooked, and how to build lasting bridges between complexity science and the policy world.
Complexity science has developed new approaches to social science, with methods that can support data-rich environments. Understanding how to communicate new insights is a natural next step for the field.
Objectives
This workshop supports PhD students and postdocs to:
> Develop a stronger understanding of how policymaking works, and how and where academic research can contribute
> Learn how to connect their research with policymaking processes and policy reports
> Build connections with other early-career researchers and with the policy community
Schedule
Sunday, May 3 • Welcome
Monday, May 4 • Sharing Knowledge
Tuesday, May 5 • Building Connections
The workshop will bring together policymakers, stakeholders, and scholars engaged in or supportive of complexity science approaches, alongside PhD students and early-career researchers from multiple institutions. The workshop will bridge research and policymaking.
Fees
> The workshop is free of charge, including dinner on Monday and lunch on Monday and Tuesday.
> A small number of scholarships will be available to cover accommodation costs. Please indicate in your cover letter if you require support to join the workshop.
Applications are no longer being accepted. The workshop is full.
