Cities as Complex System (CtCS2025) -Lessons Learned from Three Decades of Urban Complexity Science: Formulatingpolicy Recommendations
Meanwhile, the new science of cities (Batty 2013) is an established field. Despite the ambitious and
productive research program, most publications have a theoretical emphasis, and practical implications
are rarely spelled out. While we sympathize with the urge for scientific understanding, we also think it
is time for a stock-taking of practical insights. Accordingly, during the workshop, we
want to collect policy recommendations that emerged from urban complexity research. The goal is to
formulate and describe such practical insights in a comprehensible piece that will be submitted to a
respective journal. As such, the envisioned workshop will consist of discussions, group work, and
collaborative writing, while conventional presentations will be limited and only serve to stimulate
discussion.
Questions addressed in the workshop include:
1 – How has complexity contributed to our understanding of cities and their dynamics?
2 – Which policy recommendations can be formulated from urban complexity science?
3 – What challenges are emerging in urban complexity science, and how is the research area
changing with tools such as machine learning?
