Building the Heat and Health Explorer
This presentation will introduce the Heat and Health Explorer, a tool designed to identify regions and municipalities at higher risk due to rising temperatures and associated factors such as an aging population and frequent heat days. Based on our research, which examines the effects of hot weather on mortality in Austrian districts from 2015 to 2022, we found that each additional day exceeding 30°C correlates with a 2.4% increase in summer mortality per 1,000 residents. This effect is more pronounced in districts with a higher proportion of elderly individuals. Looking ahead to 2050, we anticipate that rising temperatures combined with an aging population will significantly exacerbate heat-related health risks. Our study also highlights that local green spaces can help mitigate these risks. The Heat and Health Explorer is designed not only to aid policymakers but also to offer municipalities and the general public accessible, actionable information to better understand and address these health challenges.
