Augmenting Intelligence through Collective Learning
In today’s interconnected world, the ability of groups to learn, adapt, and solve problems collectively is more critical than ever. Yet, new challenges—such as misinformation, polarization, and social fragmentation—threaten the mechanisms that enable effective collective learning. At the same time, advances in technology, including artificial intelligence (AI) and scalable platforms, present unprecedented opportunities to enhance collective learning. This three-day workshop will bring together a unique network of researchers from diverse fields—psychology, cognitive science, political science, computer science, physics, complexity science, and more—to explore how emerging technologies can strengthen collective learning.
The workshop is the first in a series of virtual and in-person workshops funded by a research collaboration grant from the National Science Foundation. Three themes act as starting points for the workshop:
- AI as Facilitative Agents: How can large language models (LLMs) and AI agents effectively support group decisions, enhance collective intelligence, and foster conflict resolution?
- Collective Learning and Collective Problem-Solving: How do synthetic content, e.g., in the form of AI-generated content, and new communication methods influence trust, shared norms, and knowledge transfer in both online and offline collectives?
- Scaling Platforms for Deliberation: What strategies can ensure that large-scale, technology-mediated platforms are resilient to bad-faith actors while remaining compatible with democratic principles?
