Eric Schnell

Eric Schnell, postdoc at the Complexity Science Hub (c) Anja Böck

Eric Schnell joined the Complexity Science Hub as a Postdoctoral Researcher in August 2026.

He is a member of the Collective Minds research group, where he studies how groups make collective decisions when individuals have competing interests. Using evolutionary game theory and mathematical modelling, his research examines how different scales of society interact in pursuing cooperation and collective action. He is particularly interested in understanding how groups can reach beneficial conclusions even when members of the group have different goals and different degrees of influence on the outcome.

Before joining CSH, Eric received his PhD in Psychological and Behavioural Science from the London School of Economics. His doctoral research investigated the cultural evolution of large-scale human cooperation, developing mathematical models to explain how humans transitioned from cooperation in small hunter-gatherer groups to modern societies numbering in the millions. His broader research interests span cultural evolution, social norms, collective action, and the application of mathematical models to societal challenges.
