Andrea Gabrielli

Andrea Gabrielli received his PhD in Theoretical Physics in 1999 from the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”. From 2019, he has been an Associate Professor of Physics at the Department of Civil, Computer Science, and Aeronautical Technologies Engineering, University “Roma Tre” of Rome, where he also serves as Deputy Director of Studies. From 2021 to the end of 2024, Andrea Gabrielli served as Scientific Director of the “Enrico Fermi” Research Center (www.cref.it/en), Rome. Before 2019, he had a permanent research position at the Institute of Complex Systems (ISC) of the Italian CNR. During his career, Andrea covered different invited professor and staff member positions in different international scientific institutions as Princeton University, Boston University, and Université Sorbonne of Paris. His general research interest is the statistical physics of in and out of equilibrium systems with multidisciplinary applications in different domains, ranging from cosmology to long-range interacting systems, fractal growth dynamics, and self organized criticality. In the last fifteen years, the focus of his research activity has been the statistical physics of complex networks from both the theoretical and applicative points of view. In particular, he worked on the development of an ensemble theory of constrained random networks [1], to the definition of economic fitness complexity framework [2], and to of network neuroscience. In this context, from 2021, he directed a research group working on a new statistical mechanics approach to heterogeneous networks grounded on a formal mathematical analogy between the Laplacian diffusion time evolution operator in networks and the canonical ensemble measure in statistical physics [3]. This permitted them to introduce a Laplacian entropy and related susceptibility to detect characteristic scales and structures in networks and to naturally generalize the Renormalization Group as defined in statistical physics [4, 5].
