Javier D. Fernández is a member of the CSH Faculty since January 2017, and a postdoctoral research fellow under an Austrian Science Fund (FWF) Lise-Meitner grant at the Vienna University of Economics and Business. He holds a PhD in Computer Science by the University of Valladolid (Spain) and the University of Chile (Chile), performing this double diploma thanks to an Erasmus Mundus grant. His thesis addressed efficient management of Big Semantic Data, proposing a binary RDF representation for scalable publishing, exchanging and consumption in the Web of Data. Before joining CSH and WU, he worked at the Ontology Engineering Group (OEG) at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Spain), and the Dipartimento di Ingegneria Informatica Automatica e Gestionale at Sapienza Università di Roma (Italy). His current research focuses on efficient Linked Data access, RDF streaming, archiving and querying dynamic Linked Data.

David Garcia

David Garcia joined CSH as Group Leader in September 2017 to build a research group funded by WWTF (Vienna Research Groups for Young Investigators Call). He holds computer science degrees from Universidad Autonoma de Madrid (Spain) and ETH Zurich (Switzerland). David did a PhD and Postdoc at ETH Zurich, working at the Chair of Systems Design.

His research focuses on computational social science, designing models and analysing human behaviour through digital traces. His main work revolves around the topics of emotions, cultures, and political polarization, combining statistical analyses of large datasets of online interaction with agent-based modeling of individual behaviour. His PhD thesis "Modeling collective emotions in online communities" provides an example of how agent-based modeling can be used to construct an integrated approach to collective emotional phenomena in cyberspace. His Postdoctoral research on opinion polarization and online privacy has been funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and the ETH Risk Centre.

David's work lies at the intersection of various scientific disciplines, combining methods from network science, computer science, and statistical physics to answer questions from psychology, economics, and political science. His interdisciplinary collaborations span more than 50 co-authors in 12 countries. David has published more than 20 journal articles, 15 conference papers, and 5 book chapters, and serves as reviewer for prestigious journals and as program committee member of numerous computer science conferences.

Leonhard Horstmeyer

Leonhard Horstmeyer works on coarse grained descriptions of stochastic network dynamical systems with a focus on precursors of critical transitions. He also investigates moment closure techniques and closure measures for the dimensional reduction of stochastic dynamical systems.

Leonhard is currently a postdoc in Stefan Thurner's group. He has written his PhD thesis on the dimensional reduction of smooth dynamical systems under the supervision of Professor Jost at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences. Previously he studied at Imperial College London and obtained a master in theoretical and mathematical physics from the LMU and TU Munich and a master in mathematics from the University of Cambridge.

Vittorio Loreto

Vittorio Loreto is member of the CSH Faculty since May 2017 (part-time). He is also full professor of physics of complex systems at Sapienza University Rome. Loreto is coordinating the Co-laboratory of Social Dynamics spread among Sapienza and the ISI Foundation Torino. His scientific activity is mainly focused on the statistical physics of complex systems and its interdisciplinary applications. In the last few years he has been active in the fields of granular media, complexity and information theory, complex networks theory, communication and language evolution, and social dynamics. He coordinated several project at the EU level and has recently coordinated the EU project EveryAware. He is presently coordinating the KREYON project aimed at unfolding the dynamics of innovation and creativity. He published over 180 papers in internationally refereed journals, conference proceedings, and book contributions, and chaired several workshops and conferences.

Michael Miess

Michael Miess joined CSH as a pre-doctoral researcher in September 2017 to work on the development and methodology of empirical agent based models. He has participated in building an agent-based model for the Austrian economy incorporating a wide range of macroeconomic data sources (national accounts, input-output tables, government statistics, census data and business surveys). This model, which is able to outperform standard time series models (ARMA and VAR models) in short- to medium-term forecasting of major macroeconomic variables and has a large potential for scenario and policy analysis, will be the main focus of his work at CSH.

Michael holds a master’s degree in economics from the University of Vienna, and is currently writing his PhD thesis in economics at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Wien) on macroeconomic empirical agent-based modelling. Michael is a researcher (on leave) at the Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS) Vienna since 2008, where he has been researching in the fields of macroeconomics, empirical stock-flow consistent macroeconomic modelling, endogenous credit-driven financial cycles, energy and environmental economics, and where he has coordinated an EU co-funded project on electromobility. Before joining CSH, he has worked as research assistant at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and at the Institute for Ecological Economics at WU Wien.

Axel Polleres

Axel Polleres is member of the CSH Faculty since January 2017. He is also full professor in the area of "Data and Knowledge Engineering" at the Vienna University of Economics and Business.

Axel obtained his doctorate and habilitation from Vienna University of Technology and worked at University of Innsbruck, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Madrid, the Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI) at the National University of Ireland, Galway, and for Siemens AG's Corporate Technology Research division before joining WU Wien. His research focuses on querying and reasoning about ontologies, rules languages, logic programming, Semantic Web technologies, Web services, knowledge management, Linked Open Data, configuration technologies and their applications. He has worked in several European and national research projects in these areas.

Axel has published more than 100 articles in journals, books, and conference and workshop contributions and co-organised several international conferences and workshops in the areas of logic programming, Semantic Web, data management, Web services and related topics and acts as editorial board member for SWJ and JWS. Moreover, he actively contributed to international standardisation efforts within the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) where he co-chaired the W3C SPARQL working group.

Olga Saukh

I am a university assistant (tenure-track assistant professor) at TU Graz, Institute for Technical Informatics, and a scientist at the Complexity Science Hub Vienna since 2017. I did my postdoctoral training at ETH Zurich in 2010-2016 working in the group headed by Prof. Lothar Thiele in the Computer Engineering and Networks Laboratory. Following my Bachelors in Applied Mathematics from the University of Kiev, Ukraine, in 2002 and my Masters in Applied Computer Science from the University of Freiburg, Germany, in 2004, I received my Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Bonn, Germany, in 2009 under the guidance of Prof. Pedro José Marrón. I received the 2010 CONET Ph.D. Academic Award for my thesis "Efficient Algorithms for Structuring Wireless Sensor Networks". My research focuses on developing, optimizing, and analyzing algorithms for cyber-physical systems and complex networks. I am interested in both theoretical beauty of algorithm engineering and in solving real-world challenges in environmental, social, and industrial domains. I serve on program committees of international conferences. My publications have been accepted at top conferences and journals such as IEEE/ACM IPSN and ACM ToSN. I received a Best Paper Award at ACM/IEEE IPSN in 2011 and in 2015, and at IEEE PerCom in 2014.

Vito D.P. Servedio

Vito D.P. Servedio is Data Scientist at the Complexity Science Hub Vienna, where his research is focused on data science and handling, computational linguistics, innovation and learning dynamics, complex networks, economic complexity, and ambient computing technologies. Before joining CSH in October 2016, Vito was research fellow at the Italian National Research Council Institute of Complex Systems (ISC-CNR) and Sapienza University of Rome, where he worked in the field of complex systems with particular attention to social dynamics, information dynamics, and innovation dynamics.

An Italian citizen, Vito Servedio studied Physics at Sapienza University of Rome and received his PhD (with honors) from Dresden University of Technology in 2000. In Dresden, he continued his research for another three years as Post-Doc. In this period he collaborated with the Max Planck Institute and the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research, mainly dealing with the calculation of the electronic structure of metal surfaces. He moved to Sapienza University of Rome in 2003 where he started working on the physics of complex systems with particular attention to complex networks. He took part in the EU-projects COSIN, DELIS, and TAGORA and was the scientific coordinator of the Sapienza Unit for both the EU project EveryAware (Enhance Environmental Awareness through Social Information Technologies) and the Kreyon project funded by the John Templeton Foundation.

Mark Strembeck

Mark Strembeck is member of the CSH Faculty and Associate Professor (tenured) at the New Media Lab of the Vienna University of Economics and Business. He is also a member of the key researcher team at the Secure Business Austria research and competence center. Among other things, his current research interests include the security analysis of complex systems.

Mark received two diploma degrees in Business Informatics (Dipl.-Wirt.Inform.) from the University of Essen (Germany) in 1998 and 1999 respectively, and a doctoral degree in Business Informatics (Dr.rer.soc.oec.) from the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Vienna) in 2003. In 2008, Mark received his Habilitation degree (venia docendi). He participated in national and international research projects and worked as a software developer in several German software companies. From February 2000 to February 2001, he was a researcher at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Essen. In April 2001, he joined the New Media Lab at the Institute for Information Systems of WU Vienna.

Stefan Thurner

Stefan Thurner is President of CSH, full professor for Science of Complex Systems at the Medical University of Vienna, external professor at the Santa Fe Institute, and part-time senior researcher at IIASA.

Stefan Thurner is full professor for Science of Complex Systems at the Medical University of Vienna, where he chairs Section for Science of Complex Systems. Since 2007 he is external professor at the Santa Fe Institute, since 2010 he is a part-time senior researcher at IIASA.

He obtained a PhD in theoretical physics from the Technical University of Vienna in 1995, and a PhD in economics from the University of Vienna in 2001. He held postdoc positions at Humboldt Universität zu Berlin and Boston University before he joined the faculty of the University of Vienna in 1999 and later Medical University. He obtaind his habilitation in theoretical physics in 2001. With his engagement with the Santa Fe Institute - he shifted his focus from theoretical physics to biological and complex systems, which are now his main scientific areas.

Since 1995 Thurner has published more than 170 scientific articles in fundamental physics (topological excitations in quantum field theories, entropy for complex systems), applied mathematics (wavelet statistics, fractal harmonic analysis, anomalous diffusion), complex systems (network theory, evolutionary systems), life sciences (network medicine, gene regulatory networks, bioinformatics, heart beat dynamics, cell motility), economics (price formation, regulation, systemic risk) and lately in social sciences (opinion formation, buerocratic inefficiency, collective human behavior in virtual worlds). He holds 2 patents.

Thurner has (co-) organized many international workshops, conferences and summerschools, and has himself presented more than 200 talks. His work has received broad interest from the media such as the New York Times, BBC world, Nature, New Scientist, Physics World and is featured in more than 400 newspaper, radio and television reports. He works in a network of scientists mostly around the Santa Fe Institute, the former Collegium Budapest, where he was a fellow in 2007, and many European initiatives. Thurner serves as a member of several scientific and editorial boards.

Apart from science Thurner has been active in quantitative financial consulting for financial institutions since 2003. In 1993 he founded a non-professional chamber music group for which he still plays the clarinet.
